American Airlines Pilots Lose Lawsuit: The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from seven pilots challenging parts of a 10-year-old contract between American Airlines and the Allied Pilots Assn. that imposed a two-tiered wage structure. The contract gave then-current pilots lifetime job security and a guarantee that wages and pension benefits would never be reduced below November, 1983, levels, but pilots hired after Nov. 1, 1983, could be hired at substantially lower pay and without similar guarantees. Differences between the groups of pilots still exist and were challenged in a suit filed by pilots hired after 1983.
