Hiegert Agrees to Private Talks

At a meeting Wednesday called by Cal State Northridge students critical of the way the school funds its athletic teams, Athletic Director Bob Hiegert agreed to speak with black student leaders in private but refused to publicly discuss grievances involving campus athletes.

The students have called for better financial and academic support for athletes.

In the meeting Wednesday with leaders of the Black Student Union and Black Student Athletic Assn., Northridge administrators were accused of ignoring the troubles, despite extensive study and support of many of the allegations by campus committees in the spring and summer of 1992.

Most of the football team took part in a one-day boycott of practice last week to draw attention to the plight of its poorer members, some of whom say they are going hungry.
