School Vouchers and the Taxpayer

Share

* Wendy Carrizosa’s letter on school vouchers (Sept. 20) revealed an attitude toward the education of our children. It said, “No longer will our tax money go to educating someone else’s child in the public school system. It will go to educating our own children in whatever school that we, the parents, decide upon.”

Did it occur to the writer that a childless taxpayer may in fact not approve of his or her tax dollars going to a school of her choice? It is our responsibility as a civilized society to provide a good education to all children.

I agree. In fact I don’t like my tax money educating anyone else’s kid because I don’t have any kids attending any school. And while I’m at it, I’d like that part of my taxes that go to public libraries back as I have my own library, much more suited to my personal tastes.

And the taxes I paid for the public parks, give those back to me also. I have my own swimming pool and recreation center, and I could make it even better with a voucher. Why should I pay for other people to go swimming or play baseball?

And I am not too enthusiastic about the service provided by the police department either. So I’d like my taxes back that are being used to protect other people, as I’ve hired my own security firm. And the Fire Department . . .
