Share

A security guard preparing to go on duty in Thousand Oaks shot himself in the leg early Friday while showing a revolver to his friend, authorities said.

Mark Joseph Monzon, 23, who works for Bel-Air Security, was in stable condition at Los Robles Regional Medical Center Friday after being treated for his wound. The bullet entered his right calf and exited just above his right ankle.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex at 2219 Los Feliz Drive in Thousand Oaks about 2:10 a.m., sheriff’s deputies said. Monzon was just going on duty to patrol a number of private businesses when it occurred.

As he showed his friend the revolver, it was apparently cocked and loaded. When he put it in his holster and tried to uncock it, it discharged a .357 magnum round.

Monzon was also cited by police for illegally having several other handguns concealed inside his vehicle. Those guns were confiscated.

Joel Sokanoff, a branch manager with the security company, said Monzon had been employed several months.
