Gala Raises $3.7 Million for City of Hope Center

City of Hope National Medical Center will receive $3.7 million raised at the Music and Entertainment Industry Chapter’s gala that honored Alain Levy, president and CEO of PolyGram. The more than 1,500 guests attending the Sept. 30 benefit at Beverly Park Estates were entertained by musicians including John Mellencamp, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tears for Fears, Amy Grant, Melissa Etheridge and Vanessa Williams. Proceeds will provide patient care, scientific research and medical education for cancer, diabetes and AIDS. )

Southern California Institute of Architecture raised $80,000 at its Sept. 18 and 19 Architectural Exhibition and Sale at the school’s Marina del Rey campus. Proceeds will establish a scholarship endowment fund for the Foundation of the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Guests included Peter Shelton, Kate Diamond, Alan Hergott, Bill Fain, Scott Johnson, Carol Eliel and Eric Moss.

Artists for a Free South Africa, an organization founded three years ago by Danny Glover, Alfre Woodard, Blair Underwood and others in the entertainment community, will receive $80,000, raised at the Sept. 21 film premiere of “Bopha!” The benefit was sponsored by the Reebok Foundation and hosted by Paramount Pictures. Proceeds will provide education and and support the work of the South African Democracy Tour.

Exceptional Children’s Foundation raised $50,000 at its “Home Run ‘93,” the 10K/5K and 1-Mile Family Fun Run held at Elysian Park on Sept. 12. Proceeds will provide developmentally disabled children and adults with specialized programs.

Fred Jordan Mission’s “Back-to-School Days” program that outfits homeless and impoverished children on Skid Row has totaled almost $1 million in clothing and shoes. Sponsors this year included Bugle Boy, Cherokee, Disney, Iggywear and Foot Locker, which donated 5,000 pairs of athletic shoes. Pizza Hut provided food and refreshments for the two-day event.

CLARE Foundation’s Sober Inn in Santa Monica announced a $25,000 grant from the Ahmanson Foundation for remodeling. The facility daily feeds 300 homeless and mentally ill alcoholics and addicts.

Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center raised $70,000 at its “Sixth Annual Evening of Wine and Roses” gala Oct. 3. Proceeds will benefit the hospital’s heart and emergency center.

American Cancer Society received $4,500 netted at the Aug. 30 “Casino Night” at Club Shelter in Pasadena. The benefit was hosted by Young Professionals Against Cancer, a group of men and women ages 25 to 40. Proceeds will be used for research, education and patient service programs.

Sojourn Shelter’s 11th annual benefit raised $75,000 for its emergency shelter for battered women and children. The Sept. 18 “Tuxedo Two-Step” party, attended by 300 guests, was held at the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey. Carol Potter was honoree.
