A 38-year-old woman was in critical condition Sunday at UCI Medical Center in Orange after being run over by a suspected hit-and-run driver on Magnolia Avenue here, authorities said.

Anaheim Police Sgt. Phillip Lock said a man was arrested in connection with the hit-and-run accident at about 11 p.m. Saturday, but he did not know the charges or the identity of the suspect. Police did not have any additional information.

Witnesses reported, however, that a Good Samaritan alerted police after he saw the accident and followed the suspect.

According to witnesses, an employee of an Anaheim Laundromat on Magnolia Avenue near Lincoln Boulevard was on her way home when she was struck by a Ford Tempo. Irene Rittenhouse, a friend of the victim’s, identified the injured woman as Angela Anduarte-Torres of Anaheim.

“The guy (in the Tempo) just ran her over and kept on going,” said Donald L. Jenkins, 36, of Fountain Valley. “He dragged her down the street for a while and didn’t stop.”

Jenkins, who was in his car at the time, said he followed the driver of the Tempo and managed to force him to the side of the street.

“I said, ‘You idiot, you just ran somebody over,’ ” Jenkins recalled. “He said, ‘I did?’ and then put it in gear and took off.”

By that time, however, Jenkins said he had copied down the driver’s license plate number and decided to go back to the scene of the accident to check on the woman.

“She was mangled pretty good,” Jenkins said.

When police arrived, Jenkins said he gave them the information on the vehicle. Jenkins said he identified the man after the arrest.
