A Record: A rare movie poster belonging to the 1931 Universal horror classic “Frankenstein” sold for a staggering $198,000 Sunday at an Odyssey Auction at the Hollywood Roosevelt. This marked the first time a poster from “Frankenstein” had ever been placed in auction and it far exceeded the pre-sale estimate of $75,000 to $100,000. “Frankenstein’s” sale price sets a new world record for vintage movie posters. The previous record holders are “Dracula” at $70,000 and “King Kong” at $52,000. . . . Meanwhile, at the Disneyland Hotel Sunday, the Howard Lowery Animated Galleries and Auctions of Burbank sold a watercolor painting of Mickey Mouse by the late Floyd Gott Fredson for $42,000, the highest price ever for a Mickey Mouse painting.

Connery’s Battle: Sean Connery said Monday he had undergone radiotherapy treatment for a throat condition at a London cancer hospital. In a TV interview, the Oscar winner said he had six weeks of radiotherapy treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital, forcing him to miss the U.S. premiere this summer of his latest film, “Rising Sun.” Connery, 62, told others who might face the treatment that there’s nothing to fear: “I was very fortunate. I didn’t get any of the sleeplessness or depressions. . . . It’s really a walk in the park.”

Shameful: Hollywood’s campaign of blacklisting actors and writers during the McCarthy Era was part of “one of the most shameful stains in American history,” actor Kirk Douglas told 300 people Sunday at the dedication of a fountain named for the late screenwriter Dalton Trumbo at the University of Colorado. Trumbo, who died in 1976, wrote “Roman Holiday” in 1953 and “The Brave One” in 1956 under aliases. Both won Oscars.

Spike’s Point of View: Spike Lee says Whoopi Goldberg is confused in defending boyfriend Ted Danson’s blackface routine at a recent Friars Club charity roast. “Whoopi’s been on the warpath defending this thing; I just think she’s confused,” the director of such films as “Malcolm X” and “Do the Right Thing” told an audience Sunday at Colby College. “There’s just no way she can defend what transpired.” The Oscar-winning actress, though, has argued that the humor was supposed to be vulgar.

Vanishing Act: Fans are staying away in droves from the St. Louis-based trial of Axl Rose over a 1991 Guns N’ Roses concert that turned into a riot. On Monday morning, only two fans were in the courtroom. Rose, lead singer of Guns N’ Roses, arrived wearing a purple suit and tie over a black shirt. Rose is being sued by Billy Stephenson, a 28-year-old fan who claims he suffered back and ear injuries after Rose allegedly landed on him during the concert.

Show of Protest: The Toronto revival of the legendary 1927 musical “Show Boat” opened Sunday, but spectators were met outside the theater by shouts from about 150 protesters, charging the Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II musical is racist. Theatergoers who packed the 1,850-seat hall in Toronto’s North York gave a standing ovation. The production team said the work, based on Edna Ferber’s novel, tells an anti-racist tale during a troubled period of American history. Robert Morse and Elaine Strich star.

‘Moon’ Waiting: “Paper Moon,” a new musical based on the film of the same name, will not open on Broadway Dec. 5 as scheduled, producer Roger Berlind said Monday. The show, starring Gregory Harrison and Christine Ebersole, has been in the works for six years. Currently playing in Millburn, N.J., the play was to have moved to Broadway Nov. 16 for previews. But, Berlind said, it “is about 75 or 80% of the way there, and I don’t want to bring it in until it’s ready.” The set will go into in storage, while the play undergoes rewrites. Berlind expects it to open in the spring.
