Weekend Box Office : ‘Demolition Man’ Fends Off ‘Hillbillies’

Share

The futuristic “Demolition Man,” with Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes, continued as the nation’s favorite movie for a second weekend. But hot on its heels were television’s best-known residents of the hills of Beverly. “The Beverly Hillbillies,” with vast TV name recognition, weathered mixed reviews and grossed a sizable $9.5 million

But it was slow going for “Judgment Night,” the tense drama with Emilio Estevez and Cuba Gooding Jr. that opened Friday. And business barely topped $1 million for the romantic comedy “Mr. Wonderful,” starring Matt Dillon and Annabella Sciorra.

* If audience intensity at the exclusive Los Angeles and New York runs of “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” is any indication, then Disney’s Touchstone Pictures has one of the hits of the season on its hands. The innovative fantasy musical opens in more theaters this weekend. TriStar Pictures’ gridiron dreams movie “Rudy” also scored with $881,194 on 117 screens, and “Fearless” with Jeff Bridges did a strong $144,000 on six screens.
