The Toronto Maple Leafs, backed once again by the exceptional goaltending of Felix Potvin, beat the Hartford Whalers, 7-2, Tuesday night at Toronto for their seventh consecutive victory.

A victory Thursday night against the Florida Panthers in Miami will give Toronto a share of the NHL record for consecutive victories at the start of a season shared by the 1934-35 Maple Leafs and the 1975-76 Buffalo Sabres.

Potvin has allowed only 15 goals in the Leafs’ seven games for a league-leading 2.14 goals-against average.

Dave Andreychuk, Doug Gilmour, Dave Ellett and Mike Krushelnyski scored against Hartford’s starting goalie, Frank Pietrangelo, and Wendel Clark scored twice and Glenn Anderson once on replacement Mario Gosselin.

Andreychuk’s eighth goal tied him with Detroit’s Sergei Fedorov for the league lead.

Pittsburgh 3, New York Islanders 2--The Penguins took an early three-goal lead at Uniondale, N.Y., and held on behind Tom Barrasso’s strong goaltending.

Barrasso turned away 45 shots.

The Islanders’ record dropped to 1-5, their worst start since the franchise’s initial season in 1972-73.

St. Louis 4, San Jose 1--Craig Janney scored twice, including the game-winner at San Jose as the Blues celebrated the return of Brett Hull and kept the Sharks winless. Hull, who with Phil Housley assisted on Janney’s eventual game-winning goal in the second period, had been sidelined since the season opener because of an abdominal injury. Curtis Joseph stopped 38 of 39 shots for the Blues.

Vancouver 5, Boston 4--Pavel Bure scored two goals and set up another at Vancouver as the Canucks held on for their third consecutive victory.
