NHL ROUNDUP : Flames Beat Oilers, 5-3, Stay Step Behind Kings

Joe Nieuwendyk and Theo Fleury each had a goal and an assist and goaltender Mike Vernon turned aside 30 shots as the Calgary Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 5-3, Wednesday night at Edmonton.

The Flames, who completed a five-game trip at 3-1-1, remained one point behind the Kings in second place in the Pacific Division. Calgary has won seven of its last eight games against Edmonton.

Quebec 5, Hartford 2--Mike Ricci, Joe Sakic and Martin Rucinsky had a goal and an assist at Hartford before 7,315, the seventh-smallest crowd in Whaler history. The Whalers drew 15,635 for their season opener against Philadelphia on Oct. 9.

Montreal 5, Dallas 2--Paul DiPietro and Stephan Lebeau scored twice at Montreal. DiPietro, held without a point in his first seven games, scored twice in the first period and Lebeau added his fourth and fifth of the season to give him 100 goals.
