OXNARD : Budget for Managing School Project Set

Share

School officials in Oxnard have established a budget of $856,000 for the management company that will oversee construction of a new elementary school in northeast Oxnard.

The new school, which is scheduled to be opened before the 1997-98 school year on land west of Rose Avenue, is in its early design phase. Oxnard school trustees agreed Wednesday to establish the budget for Tech 5 Corp. of Mountain View, which will find contractors to design and build the elementary school.

Construction of the new school will exhaust funds set aside for construction in a 1988 bond act, according to Sandra Herrera, assistant superintendent of the Oxnard School District.

In coming weeks, the district plans to begin negotiations for the purchase of farmland on which officials hope to build the school. The location was chosen based on projections of where people would be living, Herrera said.

District officials said the school would help offset crowding caused by the rapid growth of student enrollment in Oxnard.

“We can use the year-round schedule to our advantage for a little while,” Herrera said. “But by 1998, we’re going to need this school because the system will be as full as it can get.”
