GLENDALE : School Board Will Discuss Pay Raise

Share

The Glendale school district board will meet Monday with an attorney to discuss how it should respond to a teachers union demand that board members rescind their $350 monthly pay raise or face a lawsuit.

An attorney for the California Teachers Assn. sent a letter last week to the Glendale Unified School District accusing the board of violating the state’s Ralph M. Brown Act by accepting the increase--from $400 a month to $750--in the summer without holding a public hearing.

The law requires that legislative bodies hold public meetings unless dealing with legal, union bargaining or employee issues.

Rosalind D. Wolf, CTA staff counsel, warned the board that a lawsuit would be filed in 30 days if board members failed to return the extra cash they received to the district’s budget.

The board had originally planned to consult with the district’s attorney, Richard Fisher, during their regular meeting last Tuesday. But because Fisher fell ill and the meeting went on until midnight, board members decided to postpone discussions with him until Monday, said board President Jane M. Whitaker.

Monday’s meeting will begin at 7 a.m. Board members will take comments from the audience before holding a closed session to discuss the salary issue. “We’ll be discussing all of the different aspects of that particular problem--the subject of the Brown Act issue with regard to that pay increase,” Fisher said.
