SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Buena Park defense had given up an average of 271 yards, entering the Coyotes’ game with Sunny Hills Friday.

But Buena Park held the Lancers to less than half that total--119 yards--in a 10-7 victory, the Coyotes’ first of the season, at Buena Park High.

“Overall, our defense has played well all season long,” Buena Park Coach Bob Rau said. “But mental lapses have allowed opponents to kill us on two or three big plays.”

The Coyotes (1-6, 1-1 in league) scored late in the first quarter after Sunny Hills (3-4, 1-1) fumbled on the Coyote 18-yard line.

Buena Park took advantage of the turnover with a four-play drive, capped off by a 17-yard touchdown run by George McDonald, giving the Coyotes a 7-0 lead.

McDonald rushed for 151 yards in 24 carries.

Another Lancer fumble proved costly when Buena Park scored on a 17-yard field goal by Jude Reyes as time expired in the first half, giving the Coyotes a 10-0 lead.

The Coyote defense limited Sunny Hills to 78 yards in the first half.

The Lancer defense provided Sunny Hills’ only score. Bryce Pippert recovered a bad pitch by Greg Cabral and returned the fumble 81 yards for a touchdown with 6 minutes 15 seconds left in the third quarter, making it 10-7 Buena Park.

But the Lancer offense threatened only once in the second half, reaching the Coyote 32-yard line, only to have quarterback Brad Knyal sacked twice, forcing the Lancers to punt.
