USC Hopes to End 10-Game Losing Streak

USC tries to end Notre Dame’s 10-game winning streak today in the storied series involving the schools.

In the 65th meeting of a rivalry that began in 1926, the Trojans are underdogs to the second-ranked Irish (7-0). The Irish have won 14 in a row, dating to last season. USC (4-3) has won two consecutive games and is unranked.

Paul Failla will start at quarterback for Notre Dame in place of Kevin McDougal, who is recovering from a shoulder sprain.

McDougal, a senior who has started all seven of Notre Dame’s games this season, sprained his shoulder in a 45-20 victory over Brigham Young last Saturday.

McDougal is listed as probable and might get some playing time.

Failla, a junior, has completed 12 of 14 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

McDougal has completed 62 of 98 passes for 1,002 yards and four touchdowns.

USC’s hopes seem tied to junior quarterback Rob Johnson, who has completed 69.8% of his passes. His favorite target is Johnnie Morton, who has twice had three-touchdown games this season.

Left guard Joel Crisman, one of USC’s offensive line stars, returns after sitting out five games because of a foot injury.

Wide receiver Ed Hervey, who injured an ankle last Saturday against Oregon State, will not play. Injured linebackers Joe Barry and Gidion Murrell are available, Robinson said.

The Irish will be missing linebacker Anthony Peterson (knee), tight end Leon Wallace (back) and guard Ryan Leahy (knee).

Two of Notre Dame’s best players are senior offensive tackle Aaron Taylor and sophomore cornerback Bobby Taylor, no relation.
