KOREATOWN : Grant Helps Coalition Serve Community

Share

The Korean American Coalition recently received its second $250,000 check from the New York Life Foundation to continue its programs dealing with community relations, economic development and assistance for victims of last year’s riots.

The check was the final installment of a grant awarded to the coalition last year by the charity wing of the New York Life Insurance Co.

With the first portion of the grant, the coalition established its Community Linkage Project, designed to improve interracial relations in Los Angeles, said Jerry Yu, the coalition’s executive director.

Among its community relations projects, the coalition has organized multicultural workshops and forums, cultural exchange programs, an employment referral service and other educational programs to counter ethnic stereotypes and misunderstandings.

The coalition also conducted a survey of residents in Pico-Union, Koreatown and South-Central Los Angeles that identified affordable housing as the highest priority. The coalition plans to explore the feasibility of initiating affordable-housing developments with other community groups, Yu said.

Staff members will continue to provide assistance to riot victims and lobby government and relief agencies to do more to help the victims reopen their businesses, Yu said.
