REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Virginia Gets Downright Stubborn, Beats No. 12 North Carolina, 17-10

Symmion Willis passed for 239 yards and No. 21 Virginia held the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top rushing offense to 101 yards in a 17-10 victory over 12th-ranked North Carolina on Saturday at Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers (6-1, 4-1 in the ACC) took sole possession of second place in the league by defeating North Carolina for the sixth time in seven games.

North Carolina (7-2, 4-2) had been averaging 287 rushing yards per game. But the Tar Heels’ Curtis Johnson, the ACC’s top rusher with a 101-yard average, was held to only 23 yards in 10 carries by the league’s No. 2 rushing defense.

“We’ve always had the confidence we can stop the run,” Virginia defensive tackle Ryan Kuehl said. “This proves to a lot of people that if you want to play smash-mouth, knockdown, drag-out football, hey, let’s do it.”

Willis completed 22 of 31 passes as Virginia defeated North Carolina in Charlottesville for the sixth consecutive time.

North Carolina State 28, Georgia Tech 23--Terry Harvey threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns as the Wolfpack rallied in the fourth quarter to win an ACC game at Raleigh, N.C.

The victory by the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-2) moved North Carolina State closer to its sixth consecutive bowl appearance, and the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-5 and 1-5.

North Carolina State trailed, 17-14, late in the third quarter but Harvey found Ray Griffis for an eight-yard scoring pass on the first play of the fourth quarter and his 23-yard strike to Robert Hinton with 5:35 to play gave the Wolfpack an 11-point edge.

Duke 21, Wake Forest 13--Spence Fischer threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Stanley Dorsey late in the third quarter, and Duke (2-6, 1-4) ended a 17-game losing streak in the ACC at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Wake Forest is 2-5 and 1-3.

Clemson 27, East Tennessee 0--Chris Franklin scored two touchdowns and Clemson showed off a revamped offense in a nonconference victory at Clemson, S.C.

The Tigers (5-2), who were held to fewer than 300 yards a week ago in a home loss to Wake Forest, gained nearly that much in the first half in taking a 13-0 lead against the Division I-AA Buccaneers (4-4).

No. 20 Louisville 28, Navy 0--Jeff Brohm passed for three touchdowns, setting a school record with 19 for the season, leading the Cardinals to a nonconference victory at Louisville.

Louisville (7-1) also registered its first shutout in 40 games, dating to a 68-0 victory over Murray State on Sept. 8, 1990, in ending the Navy (4-3) winning streak at four games.

Brohm, a senior, completed 24 of 33 passes for 320 yards. Jamie Asher caught nine for 107 yards and Kevin Cook had six for 120. Brohm broke Ed Rubbert’s record of 18 touchdown passes in 11 games in 1984.

EAST

Robert Walker rushed for 163 yards and a touchdown as No. 18-ranked West Virginia beat Pittsburgh, 42-21, in a Big East Conference game at Morgantown, W.Va.

West Virginia (6-0, 2-0) scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions. The teams combined for six scores in their first 10 possessions.

Pittsburgh is 1-6 and 0-3.

Maurice DeShazo threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as Virginia Tech (5-2, 3-2) posted a 49-42 victory over Rutgers (4-3, 1-2) in a Big East Conference game at Blacksburg, Va. . . . Darnell Campbell ran for three touchdowns and Glenn Foley threw two touchdown passes to Keith Miller as Boston College (4-2) posted a 41-14 victory over Army (4-3) at Boston.

Safety Troy Jensen had three interceptions for San Jose State (2-5, 2-0) in a 31-6 Big West Conference victory over Louisiana Tech (1-5, 1-1) at San Jose. . . . Cal Lutheran (4-2, 2-1) rallied with 19 points in the third quarter for a 26-13 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. victory over Pomona-Pitzer (1-5, 0-4). . . .Aaron Garcia completed 15 of 32 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns to lead Cal State Sacramento (4-3, 2-0) to a 35-33 Western Football Conference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (5-2, 1-2) at San Luis Obispo.
