Fresno State Coach Jim Sweeney was simply glad to escape with a 48-45 victory over Brigham Young on Saturday at Provo, Utah, after Bulldog and Cougar passers accounted for 895 yards and nine touchdowns.

“Both quarterbacks were unbelievable,” Sweeney said. “(BYU’s) John Walsh is an outstanding player, a great athlete. We had a quarterback ourselves (Trent Dilfer) who is healthy now.”

Dilfer completed 21 of 34 passes for 456 yards and four touchdowns as Fresno State, which is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, handed BYU (4-3, 4-1) its third consecutive loss.

Walsh completed 22 of 35 passes for 439 yards and five touchdowns. BYU’s Eric Drage caught 10 passes for a career-high 232 yards.

San Diego State 20, New Mexico 17--Marshall Faulk ran for a season-high 186 yards and one touchdown at San Diego and the Aztecs (6-2, 4-0) held on for the victory when New Mexico’s Nathan Vail missed a 35-yard field-goal attempt with 18 seconds to play.

Peter Holt kicked a 31-yard field goal with 6:54 left to set the final score and lift the Aztecs to their 10th consecutive victory over the Lobos (3-4, 2-3).

Wyoming 48, Hawaii 10--Quarterback Joe Hughes passed for three scores and ran for a fourth at Laramie, Wyo.

Hughes, who completed 19 of 26 passes for 369 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter, threw touchdown passes of 23 and 69 yards to Ryan Yarborough, putting the receiver atop the WAC’s all-time touchdown reception list with 37.

McCoy completed 21 of 25 passes, connecting on 14 in a row after his only interception early in the second quarter.

Utah (4-4, 2-2) was down, 21-10, but scored the last 28 points, rolled up 556 yards of total offense and never punted.

Colorado State is 2-6 and 2-3.

Air Force 35, The Citadel 0--Backup quarterback Scott Teigen passed for two touchdowns and an opportunistic Falcon defense contributed two other scores during the nonconference game at Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Falcons (2-6) ended a six-game losing streak with their second victory of the season over a Division I-AA opponent.
