Nathan Hall, a Brigham Young starting linebacker sidelined with heart problems, says he would choose his family over football if doctors tell him playing would be a health risk. Hall is married and has a 6 1/2-month-old son.

Hall left the Fresno State-BYU game at halftime last Saturday for heart tests at a hospital emergency room, only to return to play the fourth quarter. Since then, he’s been sidelined pending the outcome of cardiac tests.

On Tuesday, Ron Asay, a cardiologist at the Central Utah Medical Clinic in Provo who cleared Hall to play the 1993 season, said Hall failed to reveal his medical history during a preseason examination. Asay said he wasn’t told that Hall has diabetes, a history of heart ailments and relatives who died of sudden heart attacks while still young men.

At a news conference, Hall’s wife, Victoria, said, “If it came down to Nathan’s decision (to play football), I would hope he would choose his family over the sport. And I know he would.”

Said Hall: “I would.”
