NORTHRIDGE : CSUN Near Top in Study of Graduates

Share

Cal State Northridge ranks sixth among almost 600 similar schools when it comes to producing graduates who go on to earn doctorates in science and engineering, according to a National Science Foundation study.

The study categorized CSUN as a “comprehensive institution”--one that offers a liberal arts program but lacks a doctoral program or has an extremely limited one.

CSUN was only ranked against other such institutions--not against traditional universities with doctoral programs. The school had 194 graduates who went on to receive doctorate degrees in science or engineering.

Administrators said they were pleased with the results, which were for 1990.

“Undergraduates here actually participate in the forefront of research activities of the faculty,” said Steven Oppenheimer, the director of the Center for Cancer and Developmental Biology at CSUN. “It’s that kind of training that really best prepares them for going on to doctoral degrees.”

The only California institution in the category to rank above CSUN was San Diego State University, which was second in the country with 254 science and engineering doctorate recipients.

The majority of pre-doctoral students at CSUN received their degrees in psychology, biology and social sciences.
