Venice : Grant to Help Restore Tidal Lagoon

Share

The California State Coastal Conservancy has approved a $550,000 grant to help restore the mile-long Ballona Lagoon, Los Angeles’ only functioning tidal wetlands.

The lagoon stretches from near Washington Boulevard to the Marina del Rey entrance channel. It connects to the newly restored Venice canals via Grand Canal.

Conservancy officials said the planned restoration will improve water quality and tidal circulation and enhance the lagoon as a fish habitat. Plans call for an overlook and interpretive display to be built near the marina at the lagoon’s south end.

The conservancy was created by the Legislature in 1975 to help preserve resources along the state’s 1,100-mile coastline.
