SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The planned Nov. 1 reopening of the Palmdale City Library has been delayed two weeks.

Library officials said they have run into unexpected problems related to the installation of a $230,000 computerized checkout system, causing the process to take longer than expected. The library closed Sept. 30.

Since the library temporarily shut its doors, Assistant City Librarian Terri Maguire said 21 employees have been sticking bar codes on about 120,000 books, magazines and other checkout materials in the library. In the process, problems have been found with more than 30,000 of those bar code stickers, requiring them to be reprinted.

City officials considered temporarily removing the 30,000 items requiring corrected bar codes from the shelves to allow for the planned Nov. 1 reopening, Maguire said. Instead it was decided to delay the opening two weeks, a delay that she said will not be extended.

“The 15th is pretty definite,” she said. “No matter what we have to go through, we will be open on the 15th.”

When the library reopens on Nov. 15, its operating hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
