Gov. Casey’s Insurance Costs Told

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The state employees insurance plan paid $353,771.71 for Gov. Robert P. Casey’s experimental heart-liver transplant and most of his follow-up treatment, the governor’s office reported Friday.
Casey, 61, underwent a life-saving, 13-hour operation on June 14 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He checked out on July 27.
He was readmitted late last month and treated for a virus and a blood infection during a three-week stay, which was not included in the billing released Friday.
A Casey spokesman, Vince Carocci, said the Blue Cross-Blue Shield plan would have paid the same bill for any other state employee. Hospitals normally keep patient bills secret, but Casey waived his confidentiality.
What, if any, deductible Casey had to pay was not immediately known. Casey has amyloidosis, a genetic disease that caused his original liver to produce an abnormal protein which, in turn, stiffened his heart and hindered digestion.
