BURBANK : Site Work to Begin for Police Heliport
Work is scheduled to begin on the future site of a 13,300-square-foot police heliport at the Burbank Airport in about two weeks, a police spokesman said.
Sgt. Ron Allison of the Glendale Police Department said grading of the dirt lot could begin within three weeks once Los Angeles city officials approve final plan checks. The hangar is expected to be available for service by May, 1994.
The heliport will house four helicopters and will contain an emergency generator, a small kitchen and office space for up to 14 Glendale and Burbank police personnel, Cates and Allison said.
Police officials have been pushing for a new site because they had outgrown the rented hangar space that the two agencies share with other aircraft companies. Currently, both agencies occupy only 1,500 square feet in space, which includes two small offices and a mechanic’s room.
Last month, the Burbank Airport Authority awarded a $1,047,000 construction contract to Glendale-based George C. Hopkins Construction Co., which will build the joint-helicopter patrol station for Glendale and Burbank.
