Shorthanded goals by Kevin Dineen and Eric Lindros highlighted a four-goal second period that helped the Philadelphia Flyers continue their hot start with a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night at Miami.

Josef Beranek and Rob Brind’Amour also scored for the Flyers, who overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit for their 10th victory in 13 games.

Brind’Amour also had two assists for the Flyers, who scored four goals during the first 13 minutes of the second period.

Flyer goaltender Dominic Roussel had 27 saves in recording his league-leading 10th victory.

“We’ve done it a few times this year where you’ll see us get down and get a few goals,” said Dineen, whose shorthanded goal gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead 5:41 into the second period. “After the first period, we knew we had to get it into gear and we came out flying.”

The Panthers outshot the Flyers, 11-7, in the third period and had a couple of chances to tie the score. The best came with about 10 seconds to play when Gord Murphy’s slap shot from the point was deflected in front of the net and Roussel came up with the save.

Pittsburgh 3, San Jose 3--Mario Lemieux scored his first goal of the season and had two assists for the Penguins at San Jose.

Lemieux sat out the first 10 games of the season after off-season back surgery. He returned last Thursday and had an assist in a loss to Quebec, but sat out last Saturday’s victory over Chicago because of soreness in his back.

Vancouver 2, N.Y. Islanders 1--Kirk McLean stopped 34 shots and Dave Babych scored the winning goal in the second period at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Canucks remained perfect on the road.

McLean preserved the victory with a sharp kick-out of Marty McInnis’ point-blank shot from the right circle with 4:08 to play.

Vancouver is 5-0 on the road.

Detroit 6, Boston 1--Ray Sheppard had two goals and two assists to lead the Red Wings at Detroit.

The victory was the Red Wings’ third in a row and fifth in their last seven games. Boston has won only two of its last nine.

Quebec 8, Tampa Bay 2--Mats Sundin had two goals and an assist at Quebec, where the Nordiques beat Lightning goaltender Pat Jablonski on six of their first 14 shots.
