VILLA PARK : 5-Foot-Tall Fence Receives Council OK

Share

Wilfred and Janet Roof have been given permission to build a 5-foot-tall wrought-iron fence in front of their home, defying Villa Park codes that limit fencing to 3 1/2 feet in height.

City Council members unanimously voted last week to allow the fencing, saying it will add beauty to Cerro Villa Drive.

The home, which has a 400-foot front yard, will soon be hidden behind an “eye-pleasing” iron fence with 6-foot-high brick pylons at 20-foot intervals, Janet Roof said. “It’s going to be a lovely fence.”

The City Council agreed with her and rejected a staff report recommending that the request be denied.

“Staff doesn’t have the discretion to change the requirements imposed by the zoning codes,” Mayor Bob Bell said. “The council does, and the fence will be an enhancement to the beauty of the area.”

He said, however, that the council’s action does not mean that everyone wanting to build a fence exceeding codes will be allowed to do so.

All such requests “still have to be considered by us and we’ll look at how the fences fit in their neighborhoods,” Bell said.
