Bergen Brunswig Corp., the Orange-based drug distributor, said Thursday that it laid off 27 computer programmers, data systems operators and other computer-related employees as part of its effort to restructure itself in the face of lost profit.

The company confirmed the layoffs after a dismissed employee called The Times to say that the workers were given one-day notices last week. “It came as a very big surprise to me,” said the former worker.

Chief Financial Officer Neil Dimick said Thursday that the workers were among the first of several waves of layoffs expected in the next 18 months. The company announced last month that it expected to trim 500 from its 4,000-person work force.

He declined to say how many others have been laid off since the September announcement, but confirmed that it was part of the larger effort.
