Palos Verdes Art Center unveils new exhibits today featuring the works of 12 of Southern California’s leading crafts artists and a solo show by sculptor Jacqueline Marks of Manhattan Beach.
In her show at the center’s Collectors Gallery, Marks draws on her background in sculpture and puppetry to provide large three-dimensional works including “Pressure Points,” a four-foot-high metal and paper figure pushing against the gallery wall. Another of the large pieces, “Intentional Solitude,” depicts a figure crouched inside a metal mesh box.
The crafts show, at the center’s Beckstrand Gallery, includes works in fiber, metal, clay, wood and other materials. Intended to highlight innovation to celebrate the “Year of American Crafts,” the works experiment with new materials and themes.
Artist Tommy Steele, for instance, fashions furniture from recycled materials found at building demolition sites. And artist James Bassler’s “Chairman’s War Shield” combines a body-size, African-style mask with trousers and black shoes to create a corporate symbol.
The other artists with works in the crafts show are Harold Greene, Donald Hartman, Judy Mulford, Sandy Bleifer, Martin Simpson, Leah Danberg, Minako Watanabe, Judy Schuster, Joannell Connally and Zbigniew Chojnacki.
