VAN NUYS : Donations Aiding Homeless Mentally Ill

Share

A Van Nuys organization gives the homeless mentally ill a place to call home--a place to shower, eat, receive mail, even vote--through the help of volunteers and donations.

“Everything in here has been donated,” said Ludelia Cowan, program coordinator for Cornerstone, 6728 Van Nuys Blvd. “You name it, it’s been donated.

On Thursday, the outreach program thanked some of the people who help make sure the homeless mentally ill of Van Nuys have somewhere to go during the day.

A luncheon honored Michael Francis O’Connor, Peggy Keith, Eliza Shanks and Leo Molicar, who work to keep the day center running.

Cornerstone also thanked staff members in the office of state Sen. David A. Roberti (D-Van Nuys) who have donated clothes, office equipment and other items for the center.

Panorama Presbyterian Church has also been a big help, Cowan said. The church helped with last year’s holiday meals and will help again this year.

Also Thursday, Cornerstone dedicated a new reading room to volunteer Ivan A. Perry, who shows up at noon five days a week to serve lunch to 25 to 60 homeless people each day.
