A Ventura man wanted in connection with a shooting was arrested after he was involved in a car accident and a police officer recognized his name, authorities said.

Roland Timbrook, 45, was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of attempted murder, hours after Daniel Willis, 33, was shot once in the back as he visited his mother’s Decatur Avenue house, Ventura Police Sgt. Larry White said.

Willis remained in Ventura County Medical Center Friday in critical condition, a nursing supervisor said.

According to witnesses, Timbrook forced his way into the east Ventura home of Wanda Salsedo and accused Willis of stealing money from him. After firing two shots into the ceiling, Timbrook allegedly shot Willis as he attempted to flee the property, White said.

Willis collapsed in a neighbor’s yard.

Four hours after the 6 p.m. incident, Ventura Police Officer Skip Young, responding to a traffic collision on South Coronado Street, recognized Timbrook’s name as that of the shooting suspect. White said Timbrook’s truck collided with a vehicle that made a U-turn directly in front of him.

Police recovered from Timbrook’s pocket a four-shot derringer pistol, which is believed to have been used in the shooting, Ventura Police Sgt. Gary McCaskill said.

Timbrook is being held at Ventura County Jail on $250,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Ventura Municipal Court.
