BURBANK : School Boundary Changes Approved

Share

New boundaries for three middle schools have been approved by the Burbank School Board in an attempt to balance student populations. However, the board put off reversing another recent change to the high school boundaries.

Board President Elena Hubbell said that some parents had called her worried about the boundary changes involving John Muir, Luther Burbank and David Starr Jordan middle schools.

“We just feel that being overcrowded on a site is not going to do them any good,” Hubbell said. “It’s educationally better for all students.”

The action, approved by a 5-0 vote Thursday, shifts students who would have gone to John Muir Middle School next year to Luther Burbank, and some of next year’s Luther Burbank incoming students will instead go to David Starr Jordan Middle School.

The board put off taking action on a request by Assistant Supt. David Aponik to rescind its decision to widen an “optional attendance triangle” in which more high school students would be able to choose which school to attend.

Under the new middle school boundaries, graduates from Washington Elementary School will go to Luther Burbank Middle School next fall, instead of John Muir. But those Washington students living on Grismer Avenue, Keeler Street, Rogers Place and Elliot Drive will be able to choose between John Muir or Luther Burbank.

Roosevelt Elementary students, now graduating to Luther Burbank Middle School, will go to Jordan Middle School if they live south of Clark Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard, but east of Hollywood Way. All other Roosevelt elementary students will have a choice between Jordan or Luther Burbank.
