NEWPORT BEACH : City May Ask County to Weigh Bridge Plan

Share

The City Council today will consider asking the county to evaluate the traffic impact of the controversial county plan to build two bridges across the Santa Ana River connecting Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa.

Newport Beach City Engineer Don Webb said that plans to build a bridge across the river at 19th Street and Banning Avenue have sparked a community debate over whether traffic through nearby residential areas on Dover Drive in Newport Beach will increase because of the bridge.

The county has run a computer traffic analysis indicating that Dover Drive will not be negatively affected by the construction of a bridge on West 19th Street in Costa Mesa. But residents near Dover Drive, which is at the end of East 19th Street, are still concerned.

The council resolution to be considered today would ask the county to analyze the effects of removing the proposed bridges at 19th Street and Banning Avenue and another bridge at Garfield and Gisler avenues, to connect Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa.
