Ed Belfour recorded his 17th career shutout, stopping 23 shots as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-0, Sunday night at Chicago, extending the Oilers’ club-record winless streak to 14 games.

The Oilers are 0-11-3 during their streak, which has broken the previous record of nine during the 1990-91 season.

“Defense has been the watchword of the Blackhawks ever since I played for them,” Chicago Coach Darryl Sutter said. “But it’s nice to know you have a rock there in Ed Belfour, otherwise you play on your heels.”

Second-period goals by Dirk Graham and Stephane Matteau broke a scoreless tie as the Blackhawks sent the Oilers to their 11th consecutive defeat.

Joe Murphy added a 15-foot wrist shot from out front at 13:41 of the final period on Jeremy Roenick’s pass from the right boards.

“We’ve got eight new faces on this team, all youngsters. But they’re willing to rebuild and while it will take time, I’m convinced this losing streak will end,” Oiler Coach Ted Green said. “I don’t know what the whole answer is right now, but we have to keep working at it.”
