GOLF ROUNDUP : Couples Wins at Kapalua; King Earns LPGA Honors

Fred Couples shot a three-under-par 70 Sunday to win the $1-million Kapalua International by four shots on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Couples shot a 67 on Saturday to put himself into position to win on the 7,293-yard, par-73 Plantation Course. He earned $180,000.

Couples finished at 16-under 274.

Blaine McCallister was four strokes back after a final-round 68 to finish at 278 and defending champion Davis Love III was at 279.

Betsy King made a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Yokawa, Japan, winning the Japan Queens Cup by one shot, becoming the U.S. LPGA’s top 1993 money winner and taking player-of-the-year honors.

In the LPGA’s final tournament of the year, King started the final round two shots off the pace but shot a bogey-free 67.

It was King’s first victory of the season, but the 29th of her career, leaving her needing only one more to enter the LPGA Hall of Fame.

With first prize of $97,500, King reached a total of $595,992 for the season.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland shot a three-under-par 68 to finish first in 1993 European Tour earnings and win the Volvo Masters with a record-setting effort at Sotogrande, Spain.

He beat Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland by a stroke, finishing 10-under at 274. That broke by four strokes the tournament record set by Ronan Rafferty of Northern Ireland in 1988.

Montgomerie collected $188,000.
