Wireless modems: Rockwell International Corp. and McCaw Cellular Communications Inc. said they plan to combine forces to develop technology for wireless modems for portable personal computers and digital planning diaries.

Rockwell’s digital communications division in Newport Beach is working closely with McCaw and its partners to incorporate so-called cellular digital packet data technology into Rockwell’s microchip sets for modems. This would enable makers of personal computers to build wireless modems.

Rockwell Digital is a pioneer in the modem industry; McCaw Cellular, of Washington, is the nation’s largest cellular service provider.
