MOORPARK : District Considers Curbing Junk Food
Moorpark elementary and secondary students’ access to junk food would be limited under a new policy to be considered by the school board tonight.
The proposed district policy would prevent the sale of food other than traditional cafeteria fare during the entire instructional day in elementary schools and would prohibit the selling of such items in secondary schools until 15 minutes into the breakfast and lunch periods.
Both changes are aimed at encouraging students to choose healthy foods during school meals instead of popcorn, candy and other less nutritious items, said Camille Plante, district director of food services.
Board member Clint Harper said he supports the proposed changes.
“We’re attempting to ensure that students eat healthy lunches and breakfasts at our schools and are not discouraged from doing so by the sale of nutritionally less-desirable items on the campus,” Harper said.
The board will consider the new policy at its meeting tonight, beginning at 6 in the library at Campus Canyon School, 15300 Monroe Ave.
