Only 10 Days Remain Until Games of Season : THE COLLEGES

Share

The biggest weekend in college football is almost here. Not this weekend, unfortunately--nothing much seems to be happening.

No, the Saturday that everyone has been waiting for is Nov. 20, when Bottom Ten fans across the nation will thrill over these flower house matchups: Temple of Doom (1-8) vs. the Pitts (2-7) and Maryland (1-8) vs. Wide Awake Forest (2-7).

The suspense! The interceptions! The missed blocks! The sloppy tackles! It’s the closest thing there is to a Bottom Ten playoff.

And, should all those games end in scoreless ties, coach Bill (The Genius) Walsh’s team could figure in the Bottom Ten race. When you consider that it has won three games by a total of 11 points, Stanford has to be considered a true plow horse candidate.

Rout of the week: Oregon (5-3) over Stanford (3-6).

Brooder’s Cup winner: Missouri (3-4-1) coach Bob Stull, on who will determine his job status: “Not some guy sitting there watching. The fans don’t have a vote. . . . Who cares if Johnny Schmuck in San Diego sees they scored 45 points?”

THE PROS

It was a big weekend for the First Family of pro football. Miami was crushed by the lowly New Jersey Jets, 27-10, enabling Dolphin Coach Don Shula to rack up his 152nd career defeat. That puts him one drubbing ahead of George Halas, the legendary Hall of Famer.

Shula still has a way to go for the coveted honor of being the NFL’s all-time losingest coach, though. That distinction belongs to Tom Landry, who has 180 setbacks under his hat.

Shula’s son David, meanwhile, registered his 19th career coaching defeat--a seemingly modest total, it’s true. But, don’t forget--he’s accomplished this in less than two years with the Cincinnati Bungles.

Then there’s son Mike (that is Don’s son, not David’s son), a tight end coach for the Chicago Bears. Since Mike’s team is 3-5, he seems ready for a head coaching job himself.

His agent will love this: Cleveland offensive lineman Tony Jones on the release of QB Bernie Kosar: “I thought I would be gone before he would. I thought with a couple of more sacks, I’d get it first.”
