Nancy Cast, who has spent more than 20 years as a school volunteer, was appointed a trustee in the Tustin Unified School District.

Cast was picked from among 13 applicants to take the seat of Trustee Sally Burrage, who resigned Oct. 25 because her family is moving to Palm Desert. Burrage had served one year of a four-year term.

Cast will serve from Nov. 22 to Dec. 11, 1994. Voters will elect a trustee in November, 1994, to fill the final two years of Burrage’s term.

“I’m willing to listen and keep an open mind,” said Cast, founder and former president of the Tustin Public Schools Foundation, a nonprofit group that provides grants to Tustin teachers who use innovative teaching methods.

Cast, the mother of five children, including three who are attending Tustin public schools, has been president or officer of the parents-teachers organizations of Arroyo Elementary, Hewes Middle School and Foothill High School.

She has received numerous awards for her school volunteer work, including the community service award from the Tustin School Management Assn. in 1992. She received the 1990 Woman of Distinction Award from the American Assn. of University Women in Tustin, and the 1977 Orange County Community Service Award for her work on child abuse prevention.

Cast has a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico and has taken additional classes at Chapman University and the UC Irvine.

She manages her husband’s chiropractic office.
