DESERT DESSERT: Is it time for pop fans to start looking into a time-share condo in Palm Desert? The Pearl Jam concert at the Empire Polo Club in Indio last weekend was a big success, and the owner of the facility is eager to hold more shows there.

“We’re looking at everything from a Neil Diamond-type pop concert to certainly country-Western shows,” says Alexander Haagen III. “We could combine country shows with a rodeo since we have rodeo grounds out there.”

But as far as something that will draw 25,000 people--15,000 of them from the L.A. area--as Pearl Jam did, it could be a while. The L.A.-based concert promotion firm Goldenvoice, which was behind the Pearl Jam appearance, hopes to do something at the site again, but nothing is currently in the works.

And Brian Murphy, president of the Avalon Attractions promotion firm, says it would take the same rare set of circumstances as the Pearl Jam show--the band has no current plans to play L.A.--to draw like that in the desert.

“It’s going to take a band that big to say that they’re going to bypass L.A. on their tour,” he says. “Not many bands would do that.”
