THOUSAND OAKS : City Offering Ways to Help Reduce Junk Mail

Share

In an effort to reduce the amount of paper going to landfills from Thousand Oaks, the city has expanded its recycling services to include a program that helps eliminate junk mail.

City residents are being offered postcards and information on how to contact regional and national companies that rent or sell mailing lists. The postcards request that the sender’s name be removed from the mailing lists and that unsolicited correspondence be discontinued.

“None of these things are foolproof for those who want to cut down on unsolicited mail coming to the house, but everything helps,” said Councilwoman Jaime Zukowski.

City officials said junk mail represents about 24% of the residential waste in Thousand Oaks. The new program is part of the city’s recycling plan to comply with state law and divert 25% of the waste going to the landfills by 1995, and 50% by the year 2000.

The program is being operated in conjunction with an effort to reduce the number of flyers and handbills that are placed on doorsteps and driveways in residential neighborhoods. Those who do not wish to receive the flyers may register with the city clerk’s office and purchase decals to put on their property.
