‘Granddaddy’ Has an Ancestor
In reference to “Publishing on the Fringe” (Oct. 17), 20 years ago a group of art pranksters from Huntington Beach initiated a ‘zine called Science Holiday. It was a brazen proto-punk conglomeration of collage, cutup word pieces, prose and contributions by people destined to become movers and shakers, including the Residents and members of the not-yet conceived Throbbing Gristle (both alternative-rock groups). Using an artist directory published in File magazine, copies were mailed all over the world.
If a 4 1/2-year-old ‘zine qualifies as the “granddaddy” of Orange County ‘zines, Science Holiday must have pulled up to the Huntington Beach pier on the Mayflower.
