LOS ANGELES AIRPORT : Commission Delays Action on Banning of Airlines
The Los Angeles Airport Commission said Tuesday that it would put off its threat to ban from Los Angeles International Airport the 76 airlines that have refused to pay increased city landing fees.
The commission will grant an unspecified “cooling off” period to permit the airlines to reconsider their decision not to pay fees that were tripled in July, commission President Ted Stein said.
“The board strongly feels that cooler heads will prevail and the airlines will pay the fees under protest,” Stein said.
The airlines’ attempts to guarantee their access to LAX through the federal courts have failed and the Air Transport Assn., the industry’s trade group, has said it may appeal to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Federico Pena.
