Pierre Turgeon had three goals and the New York Islanders scored six times in the first period Wednesday night en route to an 8-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Ottawa.

The Islanders set a team record with three goals in 39 seconds in the first period. Steve Thomas and Derek King scored 13 seconds apart for a 2-0 lead three minutes into the game, and it was 6-0 after 13 minutes.

New York, which began the game in last place in the NHL, ended its three-game losing streak. Islander goalie Ron Hextall lost his shutout bid on Bob Kudelski’s goal with 59 seconds left in the game.

Marty McInnis slipped a neat give-and-go behind Ottawa goalie Craig Billington at 10:28 of the first period. Claude Loiselle redirected a pass at 11:39, sending Billington to the bench in favor of backup goalie Daniel Berthiaume.

Boston 4, Hartford 2--Cam Neely scored two goals at Hartford in Pierre McGuire’s first game as coach of the Whalers.

McGuire was put in charge of the team Tuesday when Paul Holmgren stepped aside to become full-time general manager. Hartford’s 4-12-2 record is tied for second-worst in the NHL.

The Bruins extended their unbeaten streak to 5-0-1. It was the first of five meetings between the teams this season. Last season, Boston was 6-1 against the Whalers.

Winnipeg 2, Detroit 1--Teemu Selanne’s goal early in the third period was the difference at Winnipeg.

Selanne intercepted a dropped pass and beat goalie Chris Osgood for his 10th goal of the season.

Nelson Emerson also scored for Winnipeg, and Ray Sheppard scored for the Red Wings.

Sheppard gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 19 minutes of the first period when, with three seconds left on a power play, he flipped the puck over fallen goalie Bog Essensa for his ninth goal of the season.

Dallas 4, Tampa Bay 3--Mike Modano’s two goals at Dallas gave him 18 for the season, tying Toronto’s Wendel Clark for the NHL lead.

Modano gave Dallas a 3-2 lead at 10:17 of the second period when Mark Tinordi’s slap shot from the point deflected off Modano’s skate and past Tampa Bay goalie Daren Puppa on a power play.

Dean Evason pushed the lead to 4-2 late in the second period with the team’s third shorthanded goal of the season. Evason picked up a loose puck in front of the Tampa Bay net and knocked a shot between Puppa’s pads.

The Lightning pulled to 4-3 at 10:38 of the third period on Brian Bradley’s 25-foot slap shot. Star goalie Andy Moog was screened by teammate Craig Ludwig and didn’t see the puck.

New Jersey 4, Buffalo 0--Chris Terreri made 30 saves at East Rutherford, N.J., in recording his first shutout of the season.

Scott Stevens, John MacLean, Randy McKay and Mike Peluso scored as the Devils won for the fifth time in six games and 13th in 17 overall.

Terreri was on his game the whole night. He gained confidence early, stopping two good point shots after New Jersey went on a power play 22 seconds into the game.

Montreal 3, Edmonton 1-- Donald Brashear and Jean-Jacques Daigneault scored their first goals of the season at Montreal.

Patrick Roy made 32 saves for Montreal. Vladimir Vujtek scored his second of the season for Edmonton, which ended its seven-game trip with a 1-4-2 record.

Stephan Lebeau had an empty-net goal for Montreal with 16 seconds to play.

The Canadiens, who were coming off a 4-2 victory in Ottawa on Monday, are 2-0 since the league’s 58 referees and linesmen went on strike at midnight Sunday. Before that, they had lost three in a row.
