LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Supervisors OK Plans for Expansion of Landfill

Share

After years of legal wrangling, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Thursday approved plans to expand the Sunshine Canyon Landfill in a sensitive oak woodland north of Granada Hills.

The board’s 4-1 vote allows Browning-Ferris Industries to expand the idle garbage dump west of the Golden State Freeway by 17 million tons as part of a 10-year plan to increase the county’s waste disposal capacity.

But ven as BFI lawyers claimed victory in their decade-long struggle to expand the dump, opponents vowed to continue legal attacks on various fronts.

The decision will be reviewed by a judge, who must determine whether the environmental impact report is adequate. The review was prompted by a lawsuit by dump opponents who said earlier versions of the report were insufficient.
