Plan to Use Blasts in Quake Search Delayed

Plans to search for possibly destructive hidden thrust earthquake faults beneath the Southland by setting off 60 small explosions along a 100-mile line have been delayed until September, the scientist in charge of the project said Thursday.
Gary Fuis of the U.S. Geological Survey said that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service had declined to issue permits for the blasts--originally scheduled to take place last month--until further reviews are conducted. Fuis said the Forest Service had also not wanted the blasts to go forward during the recent fires.
The blasts would be set off along a line from Seal Beach through the San Gabriel Valley to the Mojave Desert.
