Tom Barrasso won his 250th NHL game Thursday night, a significant accomplishment for any goaltender.

Pittsburgh Coach Eddie Johnston, however, figures Barrasso’s work is only half done.

Barrasso stopped 32 shots as the Penguins held on to beat the Washington Capitals, 3-2, at Pittsburgh.

Barrasso is 250-185-58 and ranks third in victories among active goaltenders. He has 126 with Pittsburgh, a club record.

“That’s a big thing for a goalkeeper,” said Johnston, a former goalie who won 236 games for four NHL teams from 1962-78. “Let me tell you, there aren’t too many guys who can post that number. Tommy still has a long way to go. I think he’s capable of getting 500.”

Perhaps, but the pragmatic Barrasso doesn’t plan that far in advance.

“The next stop is 300,” he said. “I’d like to get that sometime next year and then we’ll go from there.”

The Capitals lost their third in a row.

Calgary 3, St. Louis 3--Theoren Fleury and Ted Drury scored in a span of 1:19 late in regulation to rally the Flames at St. Louis.

Fleury scored his 11th goal on a backhand shot with 6:37 to go, and Drury skated in alone after taking a pass from Kelly Kisio with 5:18 left for his fourth goal to tie it.

Calgary entered the night tied with Toronto for the overall NHL lead with 30 points and is 5-0-1 in its last six games.

St. Louis remained unbeaten at home at 6-0-2.

New Jersey 5, Ottawa 2--Stephane Richer, Tom Chorske and Alexander Semak scored goals in the third period at Ottawa as the Devils tied a franchise record with their fourth consecutive road victory. New Jersey has won six of seven overall.

Boston 3, San Jose 1--Glen Murray, who had not scored for more than a year, got two goals at Boston as the Bruins won their fifth in a row.

Sergei Zholtok added his first NHL goal for Boston, which is undefeated in its last seven games.

Philadelphia 6, Hartford 3--Mark Recchi scored two goals and assisted on another at Philadelphia in a game prolonged by 35 penalties.

The Flyers, the NHL’s top-scoring team, stopped a three-game losing streak. The Whalers have lost six in a row on the road.

New York Islanders 5, Montreal 1--For the second consecutive night, Pierre Turgeon went on a scoring spree, getting two goals and setting up another in a neutral-site game at Hamilton, Canada.

Turgeon had three goals and an assist in Wednesday’s 8-1 rout in Ottawa.

Chicago 3, Florida 2--Michel Goulet scored the go-ahead goal with 7:56 left at Miami as the Blackhawks gained their sixth consecutive victory.
