LAGUNA BEACH : Cleanup Crews Cut Telephone Cable

Share

Telephone service for about 26,000 people here was interrupted Monday when an underground cable was accidentally cut by a fire cleanup crew, a telephone spokesman said.

Dan Smith, a spokesman for General Telephone and Electric, said the cable was cut sometime between 1 and 1:30 p.m.

“Exactly how it was cut is uncertain, but we know it happened when crews were clearing damage from the fire,” Smith said.

The outage affected calls coming in and out of Laguna Beach only, Smith said. Calls within Laguna Beach were not disturbed.

The priority customers, including the emergency 911 line, police, fire and South Coast Hospital, had phone lines repaired within 30 minutes, Smith said.

Others came back on line “a few at a time, as quickly as we could splice cables,” Smith said.
