Fox & Firkin in Newport Files for Bankruptcy Court Protection

The Fox & Firkin Brewing Co., an Irish pub-style restaurant in Newport Beach, has filed for bankruptcy court protection from its creditors.

Stan Anderson, a spokesman for the restaurant, said that the filing was made over a tax dispute with the State Board of Equalization and that the restaurant is attempting to negotiate a settlement.

In the meantime, it remains open for business.

Heritage Brewing Co. in Dana Point won a bronze medal for its Red Fox Pale Ale at the 1993 Great American Beer Festival in Boulder, Colo. This is the brewery’s second such honor; during the 1991 festival, its White Fox Blonde Ale won a gold medal.

Many Southern California bars and restaurants that serve Coors beer are also selling “Thank you, California firefighters” certificates for $1 each. The brewing company said it will donate $1 for each certificate purchased (plus the $1 purchase price) to the American Red Cross’ local disaster relief fund.

Carmelo’s Ristorante in Corona del Mar has established a preferred culinary club to allow members to reserve a private dining room and special menu.

Restaurant owner Carmelo Manto said there is no charge to join, but those interested must sign up by calling him at (714) 675-1922.

BJ’s Chicago Pizzerias are handing out frequent diner cards in the shape of a pizza pie. Fill in eight “slices,” each representing a $10 purchase, and you will receive a free large pizza and a chance to win a trip for two to Maui, where a BJ’s will open in June.
