When Mac Bernd, Newport-Mesa Unified schools’ new superintendent, visited Corona del Mar High School, one of the first things he noticed was the gum--globs of it stuck to cement all over campus. Bernd arranged for the district to remove it, at a cost of $1,500.
Reaction was varied. Some felt the money would be better spent on items such as books and supplies. So members of an advanced placement English class started a campaign to raise funds to pay for the project. The class figured it could gather $1 from each of the school’s 1,500 students to cover the costs. The students raised $635.70 . . . and are enjoying a cleaner campus.
