Tatiana Nikolayeva; Noted Russian Pianist, Composer

Tatiana Nikolayeva, 69, Russian pianist and composer renowned for her interpretation of Bach and Dmitri Shostakovich. She was trained at Moscow’s Central Music School and the Moscow Conservancy, where she later taught. After several concerts in Russia, Miss Nikolayeva gained international recognition when she won first prize at Leipzig’s Bach Festival in 1950 and began touring in Europe. There she met Shostakovich and, at the composer’s request, she played the premiere of his 24 Preludes and Fugues Op. 87 in 1952. She was performing the same work Saturday night in San Francisco’s Herbst Theater when she was stricken by a cerebral aneurysm. She finished the recital before she was taken to California-Pacific Medical Center. On Monday in San Francisco.
