A Santa Ana man was critically injured Thursday night in a hit-and-run accident, but two police officers saw the accident and quickly caught a suspect.

Manuel Ponce Sifuentes, 43, was hit by an auto driven by 19-year-old Raul Dominguez of Santa Ana as he was crossing Standard Street, said a Santa Ana police spokesman.

Sifuentes’ roommates said Friday he was walking home after spending Thanksgiving at a friend’s house.

Dominguez was driving southbound on Standard Street and hit Sifuentes in the intersection of Standard and McFadden Avenue about 11 p.m. and then sped away, Sgt. T. G. Sawyer said.

Police caught Dominguez at the intersection of Standard Street and Edinger Avenue, a half mile away, and arrested him on suspicion of felony drunk driving and felony hit and run.

Sifuentes was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where his condition Friday was upgraded to guarded.

Sifuentes is single and has lived with a family on Harwood Place for two years. A friend of Sifuentes said he works in an electric guitar factory.
